USN Support Aircraft

Page history last edited by Si Tyler 16 years, 4 months ago

Following the amount of work that detailing USN Aircraft generated I have broken the page up into management pieces.  This page covers the USN Support aircraft without which life would have been a lot more difficult.

HELICOPTERS

  • SH-2 Seasprite - A recent TD release.  I havent got very far with this model yet,  It has been undercoated and given a basecoat of green.  But no further.

  • SH-3 - While doing the two F-4s and the RF-8 I thought it would be about time that I turned my attention to some USN SAR.  Very quick mock up of Steve Millikins CHINK-69 Again home made decals.  No where near finished (as usual!!)

Update - Now that I have had another chance to look at the aircraft the light green possibly isn't camouflage overspray but weathering.  The beauty of this scale is that you get loads on spares to experiment on.  I will leave this one as is and just finish the decals off and try it as an experiment ready for the proper one.

Updated Photo - Added the NAVY at the rear and some national insignia.  Not too sure about the one on the tail.  The HH-53 had them here so I thought why not.

TANKERS

  •  EKA-3 - The TD A3D skywarrior model.  After a bit of break I am back in the Saddle with the decals.  This is a quick WIP shot of a pair of the EKA-3B with a mix of both Dom's and my home made decals.  I need to finish these off they need to be varnished and then dullcoted back down.

  • KA-6D - TD and OO both do an A-6, for Thud Ridge you have the option of tanker support, so after a bit of work with a modelling tool, research on the BuNos and Modex for KA-6D aircraft I knocked up this one to do.  It doesn't have the "proper" tank options under wing but heyho TLAR as usual.  My earlier A-6s were from CVW-9 and keeping them with the updated F-4s that I did from the Constellation I followed the same theme and updated the tail art to fit with some more home made decals.  Crafty Computer Paper very kindly delivered a pack of 10 sheets of A4 decal paper which has replenished the dwindling stock.

I have now added the hose and basket from brass wire and green stuff.  I have now found a handy use for all those spare magnets which help painting and also letting me put a white background under the model for the photos.

As usual not quite finished now need to do the basket in white/light gray and re-varnish.

RA-5C - The TD model of the Vigilante is a cracking model.  I only need one of these for Downtown, but could have a couple for Thud Ridge.  Keeping up the current CVW-9 them I found an picture of this particular aircraft in concert with an F-4 and made up the decals accordingly.  They had to be rescaled slightly to fit the TD sculpting.
